Global challenges from different perspectives 2024

This year in AP Seminar students explored the UN Sustainable Development Goals and did research about different global challenges of their choice to develop critical thinking and research skills. The projects started with research questions and selection of academic sources in databases such as JSTOR, Gale, and EBSCO. Students worked in groups to do research about their topics through multiple-lens analysis and collaboration to produce individual research reports that analyze the challenges and team multimedia presentations to propose holistic solutions.

These are some comments from AP Seminar students and a special guest:

“Presenting a months’ worth of work in just ten minutes gave me feelings of relief and nostalgia. My group feels pride for what we were able to achieve together. I can’t believe it’s over.” María Paula B, 10° student.

“I had never been so nervous in my life. I thought I wasn’t capable, but with my group’s support everything went well. I’m extremely grateful for such a great superstar group”. Juan José R, 10° student.

“I had the opportunity to listen to a few presentations and I was floored by the depth of the students’ research and most significantly by their public speaking abilities. Their research questions, the different perspectives covered, and the structured and persuasive delivery all made for a fantastic academic experience. Congratulations!” Marcela Junguito, Deputy Head of School.

Best of Bogotá Project

The five sections of Creative Writing class spent the last few weeks putting together a tour guide of Bogotá written by teens for teens. They wrote about their favorite gems and hidden spots in five different categories—arts & entertainment; sports & recreation; people & places; food & drinks; shopping & services—discovering the city as they wrote, taking their audience on a trip 2600 mts closer to the stars.

Perspectives about global challenges

Ap Seminar students investigated global challenges from different perspectives to produce individual research reports and team multimedia presentations. One group decided to investigate the War of Drugs in Colombia and the United States to consider the historical, political, social and economic impacts. Another group decided to study microfinance as a solution from economic, ethical and futuristic perspectives to address social and economic inequality. The other two groups focused their research on sustainability challenges: energy consumption in the automotive industry in the United States and sustainable cities around the world. The first group considered different technologies, policies, financial trade-offs and options for storing car data. The other group investigated social, economic and environmental issues by evaluating Smart cities, mixed-use development and social participation in urban planning. Student work shows high levels of engagement and commitment to research as a tool for understanding complex issues that affect individuals and communities.

Vacation Reading and Book Reports

Vacation Reading and Book Reports

Luz Elena Barragán
Elementary English Coordinator

At Colegio Los Nogales students are always invited to maintain the habit of reading during vacation time. The English Department encourages students to choose and read English books in order to keep consistent growth of their vocabulary, reading comprehension strategies, and thinking skills. When returning to virtual school in January, elementary students were able to share what they had read by planning, designing, and presenting their book reports.

First graders answered some questions about the book they chose and read, classified information, and made an interesting video. They orally described the theme of the book and the plot, explained the reason why they read the book, described their favorite part, and expressed their opinion and recommendation on it. Students had the chance to develop and practice their oral skills. Besides, they shared their videos in class and learned to receive and give feedback.

Second graders also chose books that they found engaging and read them during the holidays. To share their thoughts about the books they read, they completed a hands-on project using very basic materials in an innovative way. They were asked to use their creativity and some flash cards in order to  describe main characters, draw a picture of the setting, and write the main events that happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story. With the flashcards, they created a book mobile.  Second graders found this project super exciting and they were eager to present it to their classmates. It was an opportunity for students to demonstrate their comprehension of story elements (characters, setting and plot), as well as to refine their writing skills.

In 3rd grade, students checked out books from the school library and read them during the holidays. As they came back, they shared the book they had read and made a book report in Drive. The tool gave teachers the possibility to instantly see students’ work, answer questions on the spot, and make comments during the working time. This was an interesting first, since in virtual education, it is hard to give feedback until students post their final work. The book report project allowed third graders to refresh topics seen in the past such as main idea, details and supporting sentences, voice of the narrator (first and third person), and summary.  Third graders also had the opportunity to think and tell what kind of people would enjoy reading their book.

We hope you enjoy this book reports as much as our students did!
